A red letter day is a memorable important or happy occasion, taken from the red letters used in ecclesiastical calendars to indicate saints days and feasts.

Nowadays its usually an important day.

The expression dates back to mediaeval church calendars where high days and holidays were marked in red unlike the rest of the calendar which was black ink.
