Think the answer is erging but can't work it back to mother. Erging is egging on and something to do with rowing, but where mother comes in?
can only see GIN as in mother's ruin but isn't that a bit obscure? (erGINg/egGINg)
Oh didn't think of gin, could be. But as you say a bit obscure, though sometimes they are.
