Whist the RSPCA do some good I cannot let the action of them shooting dogs lay. As one of the public that in the past raised and donated funds, I feel that I like you all should have a voice in their chosen method of killing.

The practice of dead bolting dogs was researched, campaigned against, and banned in the Irish pounds 25 years ago.

10 GSD dogs living in their dead owners house were killed on grasping poles with the dead bolt as the RSPCA inspectors did not call and ask other rescues for help. This happened right here in Wales only months ago.

This method cannot be administrated with out the gun touching the skull.

The RSPCA in their own guidelines for farm animal slaughter, state that the bolt is only a stunning method and “sticking, pithing or bleeding ” needs to be done to ensure the animal is actually dead.

Please sign our online petition and send it to everyone you know or print off a .pdf]hard copy and collect signatures from anyone who feels the practice of killing dogs with a captive bolt is inhumane and wrong. We need as many signatures as possible to be taken seriously and be heard. In a months time I would like to formally present our petition to the RSPCA.

The real problem is the irresponsible do owners who allow them to breed resulting in thousands of unwanted puppies being born. As sad as it may be for dog lovers to know they are killed, there is no point trying to find them homes because they simply don't exist.

The destruction of the dogs has to be done affordably. Perhaps a levy should be placed on all dog owners to fund the much higer cost of other culling methods. A huge fine should be levied against owners who do not register and desex their dogs.

Unfortunately there's a campaigning group spreading a lot of misinformation about this matter. The dogs in question were not put to sleep because they 'did not call and ask other rescues for help'. They were put to sleep due to a combination of their condition (ill health), and their temperament. They had little choice but to follow this course of action.

It's a difficult decision for Inspectors to take when they have to destroy an animal, and it's not one they ever take lightly. Their jobs aren't well paid, and they do it because they believe wholeheartedly in animal welfare. They really do get a raw deal from the public, due to misinformation such as is contained in this post.

I often question such posters, and what they do to contribute to animal welfare themselves. Do they volunteer? Are they ever exposed to the often very dangerous conditions that Inspectors walk into? I very much doubt it.

Of course, everyone has a right to have their say on animal welfare issues, and petitions are a perfectly sensible way to do so. But to spread untruths, and slate the work of the organisation as a whole is grossly unfair.

The point of this petition is not that the animals were put to sleep (although that is debatable) - it is the method used!!

If the animals were so aggressive how was it possible to use a captive bolt on them? It has to be used at point blank range and the animals would have to have been restrained. So why not just inject them as normal?

Not all RSPCA inspectors are caring people - I met one recently (unfortunately) and you could not have met a more unkind, uncaring and totally unfeeling person. Destroying an animal meant absolutely nothing to this person.

Frankly the RSPCA has far too much power.

If they spent a fraction of the money that they spend on advertising actually on animals (without a TV camera being present) I am sure they would get far more support.

And yes I have been involved in rescue and have lots of experience with GSD's (along with other breeds).

Both these cannot be wrong? Or maybe the RSPCA know more than them?
