Mr Besson said Britain's generous welfare benefits encourage people from all over the world to use his country as a base to get across the Channel, where they claim asylum or else disappear into the black economy.

One has to ask where will all these people go, when the French evict them from Calais?

'It's ridiculous - where are all the evicted people expected to go,' said Jean-Pierre Boutoille, a Catholic abbot who works for the C-Sur charity.

May I suggest, back from whence they came?

Who would then do all the menial jobs that none of us seem to want?
I was under the impression that if you wanted to leave your country of birth and claim asylum you did so in the first 'friendly'country you came to. Surely, then, we should only accept people from the Republic of Ireland or France.

Everyone else should be on the first one way transport out of this country. And stating that in no way labels me a racist. I understand that if you live in an 'unfriendly' country and you are entitled to a British passport then, of course, our front door should be open. However, we need to find a more effective way to keep the back door closed....an ideal impossible to maintain 100% of the time I know, but surely we should be able to keep it locked more of the time that at present.
sandy.......some of the 3,500 who are drawing unemployment money.
I've just noticed the post above mine.....

It is high time that menial jobs in this country are done by people who already live here. There is nothing wrong with cleaning loos for a living or peeling spuds or washing dishes and the like.

I don't know if such a scheme still exists, but years ago I was familiar with the Community Programme. Unemployed people could enrol and do jobs like painting youth club premises, clearing tow paths etc. They were given the dole rate plus a bit extra. It was (or still is?) a great way to get back into the habit of working for your living.

I DON...I agree, but the law here seems to give them time to appeal against their extradition and they just disappear.
Yesterday there was a thread about the rise of Islam in the UK and a 2001 Census suggested 3% of the population was Muslim, but now I would have to say over 8yrs and the black immigration, I would hazard a guess at 10% or more..........5million.
As I've said a squillion times, all we have to do is implement standard EU regs. The only one that may actually help us we ignore!
I.Don No, in no way is disagreeing with illegal immigration racist.

The hackneyed 'who will do the jobs we won't' argument really really annoys me considering the amount of workshy wastrels we've got in this country. Given the choice of starving or picking spuds, I'd be really surprised if even the most lazy of the lazy wouldn't choose the latter if we stopped their benefits.
The worse part is that many of these illegals are from Afghanistan or Iraq. Why don't they send them back so they can defend their own country? Our soldiers are dying every day because of the AWOLs of this crowd.

Good point Rov,

But before we send them back to Iraq or Afghanistan, implement compulsory National Service (their nation, that is) on them.

Round them up send them to Catterick or Aldershot for basic training, and then hand them over to their own Army for more advanced training.
In which case you'd very likely be complaining about the amount of money we were spending training them...
