As I mentioned last week, because of the Shakespeare connection, the theatre is obviously very important in this region. You may not be aware, but the Royal Shakespeare Theatre is currently undergoing a complete transformation. I drove past it a few days ago and they seem to be making good progress; the surrounding area is looking very attractive. There are several excellent amateur theatres to be found in the neighbouring towns – no doubt attracted by the influence of the Bard. .
Music also plays an important part in the cultural life of the region. As well as folk festivals, there are modern and classical music festivals, pop concerts at Warwick Castle, and workshops for aspiring young musicians, both singers and instrumentalists. I have to admit that my interest in pop music peaked in the late 1950s and early 60s (Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers) and later I moved to more Easy Listening (Dr Hook, Neil Diamond, Chris de Burgh). Nevertheless, classical music has remained a constant love, although I now prefer the melodic strains of a piano concerto to the triumphal bells and thunderous cannon of the 1812 Overture (the first LP I ever bought).
