MM Links October 2009 (Week 2)
42 Answers
Welcome to the second week of links set by me, Christiana, the Cheerful One, otherwise known as Her Cheerfulness. I hope my choices this week will result in more points scored and therefore more cheerfulness all round.
After the immediacy of last week, I thought I might go back in time to my somewhat different childhood. I moved from Lancashire to a council flat in London at the tender age of 3 and lived there happily for many years. My father was a larger-than-life character who earned his living somewhat precariously, turning his hand to many things, but mostly as a street photographer. It was a somewhat fraught occupation, disapproved of by the police who ‘moved on’ my father and his friends at frequent intervals.

I remember my mother knitting little garments for it, including an extra hole for his tail, and my father putting nappies on it (also with an extra hole) whenever he took the monkey out. His friends, too, had monkeys, or sometimes parrots, all used to encourage the public to purchase photos. To me, this all seemed normal. As did the long evenings spent on my own whilst my parents disappeared into the kitchen, which, in the evenings, doubled as a dark room
It was through him that I was first introduced to cryptic crosswords, and also to the value of education, though he had had little himself. He was immensely proud when I won a scholarship to Godolphin and Latymer, the local direct grant grammar school.

Later on, when I was in my teens, my father would take me to dances at places like Seymour Hall and to weddings at which, having gone up in the world, he was now the official photographer. My job was to part the clients from their money – not so easy as he was somewhat Victorian over these matters. He expected me to flirt a little, but woe betide any man who stepped over the line where his precious daughter was concerned.
Whilst talking of stepping over the line, not everyone is adhering to the rule relating the word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains AT LEAST FOUR LETTERS AND AT MOST EIGHT. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one or more of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when my selected words will be declared, and points awarded in the usual manner. My second set of words to be linked should appear below at 9.00am.
