... It's pointless to display the subscriptions in the sidebar unless they're updated.

Better still, bin that sidebar and invest the functionality in making sense of My Profile. You have got tabs for Threads Involving Me, Qs I answered, and Subscribed threads, the function of which has been like whirling dervishes. If you are not going to email subscribers, what is the point of Subscribed threads? And what threads Involve Me that I have NOT answered?
