i want to buy a car cos my poor classic austin a30 is no longer but need some ideas. i like the new style beetles and the pt cruiser but was wondering if anyone had any ideas of a funky modern car which i can get between £1000 - £4000

Ford Ka and Fiesta are good if you don't do the miles. Fully loaded they are good value, cheap insurance and servicing.

If you like the new beetle then i would think that you will also like the fiat 500 which has the same bubble style look. it all depends on what size car you want, the 500 is very small but probably quite cheap. Whatever you do don't go for the PT Cruiser, its not a very well known car and the parts probably won't be very easy to get if anything goes wrong, (which lets face it, it is an american car = Poor build quality) i would always recommend German cars for anybody i.e. Volkswagen, BMW etc... but with your budget you might be hard pushed to find an ideal car for you unless your looking for a very small car eg VW Polo. What about the new style Mini (second hand with the budget you have though) it is a very funky looking car and it is well known! Like I said, it all depends on what size you want and wether or not you want brand new. Just keep looking and you will find the right car for you. Be sure to read car reviews on the net as they are mostly very accurate. Happy searching!
