Is it possible to buy a South London bus map, (like the Underground map but larger ) say from roughly Kingston Surrey area to anywhere near Oxford Street area? None of the maps I can find online are those areas.

The South West London Bus Guide is exactly what you want. If you need to see exactly where buses running into central London go, you might also need the Central London Bus Guide.
Both of those guides are large, fold-out maps, showing all bus routes in the relevant areas. The back of the map lists all services numerically, together with route details.
The bus guides are free and can be obtained from any Transport for London Travel Information Centre. The six Travel Information Centres are located at Euston (Mainline) Station, Victoria (Mainline) Station, Liverpool Street Station (just to the right as you enter the main Underground entrance from the mainline station), Heathrow Tube Station (for Terminals 1, 2 & 3), Piccadilly Circus Underground Station and Camden Town Hall (Mon to Fri office hours only). They're also available from some local bus stations.
The only problem with getting hold of the guides is that they never seem to distribute enough copies to meet demand, so the Travel Information Centres often run out of them. However you can get them posted to you, free of charge, simply by calling TfL on 020 7222 1234.
