As usual there is one answer left to get in this quiz where each answer is the name of an animal. The clue reads Was he around in the roaring 40's? (4) There is an obvious answer beginning with L but I can't work out why it's right! Any help or alternative suggestions would be great - thanks in advance.

LION I L= Roman numeral for 40
I think you will find that the Roman numeral for fifty is L. Forty is XL.
Sorry,so it is,don't know what i was thinking.
No problem Polly. It happens to me all the time :-)
I can see the link with roar and lion but cannot see why forties. The only other answers I can think of are lynx and lamb but there again i cannot see why.
Is there a question no. 40 in your quiz? Maybe the word 'lion' appears in it - either forward or reversed.

Thanks everyone for your help - it's really appreciated! I'd already been down the Roman numeral road and unfortunately there's not a question No.40!
The Roaring Forties is a name given, especially by sailors, to the latitudes between 40°S and 50°S, so called because of the boisterous and prevailing westerly winds.

maybe it's a `sea' lion
Maybe if they have misspelled LYNX as LINX then you get the XL around and "in" in the middle. But you would think question setters can spell .... maybe not!
Does it refer to the roaring lion in the MGM films? Did that start in the 40s?
The MGM lion was around in the 1920's.
Fair enough, just an idea

Thanks everyone for all your time and ideas - Lion is the obvious answer to the roaring part of the clue but I dont know why, and lynx, as you say spelt wrongly, ties in with the 40's part! I really thought I was missing the obvious answer when I asked for help but maybe not! I'll have to post the quiz soon but all help greatly appreciated!
