I had an op on my Achillies tendon Jan.2008. 3 days before the op my GP told me I had Diabeties but didn't need medication as it was 7.4. The surgeon was aware of this. 2 months after the op when the wound didn't heal I found a stitch. Taken out by A&E as GP surgery couldn't get it out. I still had some pain and was referred back to the surgeon who said all I needed was Physio. Had Physio all summer but still had tiny bit of scab that wouldn't heal. About 8 weeks ago I woke in the night and found a wet patch of clear fluid, and a small opening where the scab had been. I saw GP next day and had antibiotics. Thought all was well until Dec 8th when I woke in pain. Off to A&E as I couldn't wait 'til GP opened, as it hurt. Was given antibiotics and told to see my GP as I was Diabetic and might need Metformin. I thought all was ok by diet as my reading had stayed the same all year and Cholesterol had dropped twice. GP give me Metformin that day. Later that night I ended up back in A&E in the most pain I have ever known, being kept in for 2 weeks while the infection raged up past my knee. I was told this was Cellulitus. Had IV antibiotics x 2, 4 times a day for 5 days. The wound burst on the 5th day and the relief from pain was fantastic. I had an op after 10 days to clean the wound from the rest of infection. It's still oozing. Finally came home Dec 22nd. I am off to hosp 2m hoping the stitches will come out. I have been told it was all due to me being a Diabetic. I think this is all TOSH. I have also been told I might need plastic surgery as the skin is only just holding together. DO ANY OF YOU THINK THERE WAS ANOTHER STITCH IN THERE?
miss skippy....not really.....you would have to show negligence.
Wounds get infected, stitches get infected......a swab of the pus would show the offending organism and suggest the appropriate antibiotic required.
You have had a raw deal, but these things happen.
The nurses told me if I had it I would be moved to a side ward and as I had an open wound they wouldn't leave me with all the others. So as I stayed put I presumed all was ok. I also had a swab taken of the wound when it burst. Would that show what caused it, do you think I have a case for a row with the Doc 2m?
Thanks for your help I didn't really mean a row as such but I still don't see how he can blame the Diabeties. Or surely that means every wound on every Diabetic would never heal .I am going in for Bariatric surgery soon and am very worried about this Cellulitus thing.
