Hi Crofter!
As a further point, given the subject's phobia would it make sense, given the missing clue number, to actually fill the blanks with that number?

Hi Shoni70!
There is a weekly EV thread which usually starts in crosswords about 4 p.m. on Sundays. All are welcome.
There has been much debate on this one with the general consensus being that the cells are left blank. Despite my reservations I sent in my entry accordingly. The only other possibility as far as I can see is to fill the cells with a musical note.

I toyed with leaving every overlap cell empty Apart from the perimeter, they appear at regular steps (the distance apart coinciding with his "condition"). Note also that one of the numered clue locators is missing!
I finally decided to enter into each empty cell an appropriate two-digit number.
I still feel a little uneasy that I may not have done the correct thing!
