The sun looking big as it sets over the sea on films and the moon looking larger then normal as it rises

Im going to assume that this is due to certain effects or lenses being used, But is there anywhere on earth that the sun does actually look bigger as it sets over the sea or the moon looking bigger as it rises as when I was in thailand the moon seemed to look a lot bigger then it does here in the uk.

A full moon actually looks bigger at the horizon because it is viewed through more atmosphere. The curvature of this acts as a magnifying lens. It is also affected by how much humidity is in the atmosphere.
The large moon setting over the sea on a tropical island is no myth.
In some films the moon size may be manipulated or indeed inserted into the footage.

There is no discernable manification effect, the moon is the same size regardless it's just that lower to the horizon means that other objects are in the line of sight that give it the illusion of being bigger. See here: http://facstaff.uww.edu/mccreadd/
