PENGUIN books published the Penguin Dictionary of Troublesome Words in
1984. It was reprinted in 1985 and 1986. The publishers' note tells me that the author of the book, Bill Bryson, was born in 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa and grew up there. A graduate of Drake University, he worked as a copy editor for the Des Moines Register. He then went to England and worked for the Bournemouth Evening Echo, the Financial Weekly and joined The Times in 1980 as the deputy chief sub-editor.
