I have completed the crossword but cannot see why a couple of the answers are the answers!
4d: "Number two is nothing here" (6-2-7). Second in command fits perfectly but how does that relate to the clue?
18d: "Rock, I'd say, in case of "garage" is not middle of the road" (7). I am sure it's wayside (anagam of "i'd say" etc) but how does the rest make any sense please?
Grateful for any enlightenment. Thanks. barry

answered previously as WAYSIDE
The second (letter) in command is o (looks like a zero = nothing).
Can someone explain how it's wayside? The case of garage is GE not WE which would lead to gayside - unless I'm missing sthg here...
wayside
Even on that link no-one gives a satisfactory explanation - looks like a misprint in the clue to me.
awayside

Thank you everyone for your help. I find it hard to believe that sometimes a paper of the quality and standing of The Sunday Times can set a crossword with such clumsy or inaccurate clues. It happens sometimes, and there are examples in this web site of a few even recenlty.
Anyway, thanks to all of you. barrym
