Thanks - it looks like Robert Penn Warren, one of whose poetry anthologies was entitled 'Now and Then'.

It is indeed ASHORE. I have since discovered that the NZ author CK Stead wrote All Visitors Ashore. I'm a Kiwi but am shamefully ignorant of my own country's literature!
