Cryptic composer

This has me totally stumped. The answer is a composer, and any help would be much appreciated. " He would mix and feel garden mulch with his bare hands." Also, I'm after confirmation of a choice for the following, '" Northampton's traditional industry led many a person to declare.' Is it Schumann or Schubert? Many thanks.

I'd prefer Schumann - declare the lead of "many" (man) , sounds like "man(n)" (??)

Sadly no. The question merely says The name of a composer can be found in this cryptic clue. I've managed to work out the others, but this one has me absolutely foxed. If the other answers are anything to go by, this one may well be a classical composer. I've tried working this one out all day today, and I feel my brain is now mulch!

It's a long shot but Schumann - man= person + N (the name you sign/declare with)?

Thank you once again for all your help and explanations. For golfingpro, the name of the quiz is Music All Around. A friend was doing it and I photocopied it. It's kept me quiet over the Bank Holiday!
