9A: Split up part of guitar (4). The answer is clearly FRET - but what does this have to do with Splitting, or Splitting Up? Is it intended to be an "&Lit"? If so, it's extremely obtuse - and not entirely accurate!

Frets "split up" a guitar's fretboard. That's the only sense I can make out of this one! It was discussed a bit yesterday, along with the usual (and entirely accurate!) moans about how bad the Sunday Times cryptic clues have become...

Thanks for that - that's all I could think of when I suggested an attempted - but weak - &LIT. Didn't see earlier posts.
i never seem to be able to answer other peoples questions on time. very hesitatingly could i suggest that ' fret ' as in fret saw could be what the compiler is hinting at?
It could be, I suppose... Isn't a fret saw something that is used to cut curved outlines in flat pieces of wood...?
that's what it says in the dictionary, but the compiler seems to want to stretch things a bit. so do i., like his neck!!
