What are deemed to be good speeds for Broadbad.?

I now have speeds of ..Downloading 6312. Uploading 215. (whatever they may mean.)

There is no doubt that my BT connection is far superior to the 'dial-up' one which I had with Virgin.net and which I have retained in my Comp for emergency use; in the event of BT going 'off-line' temporarily.

I'm always getting confused with ..uploads and downloads.... I assume that downloads are what come into my computer...or is it actually the otherway around.

Anyway snags, it's interesting to note that you are getting slower downloads than me but your uploads are faster. It's all very confusing.!!

Correct. I still sometimes have problems viewing iPlayer programmes with the speed I'm getting. My OH's download rarely gets above 800!

Before you even start considering download (or upload) speeds, it's worth running a ping test, which effectively checks the quality of your phone line. Click 'Begin test' here:
http://www.pingtest.net/
Check your grade on the results page and then click on 'Learn more about grades' to see what it actually means to you.

Then try a speed test here:
http://www.speedtest.net/
The box which appears in the top left corner will give you a useful interpretation of what the download speed means. (i.e. it will show you how long certain types of file will take to download). It will also show you a comparison with the average download speed that other people using the same ISP have obtained from that site.

Then click on 'View upload speed' to see the same information for your uploads.

PS: I've got a grade 'A' ping, with a current download speed of 5.84Mbps (which is slightly above what others with the same ISP have been obtaining) and an upload speed of 0.38Mbps (which is only about one quarter of what others with the same ISP obtain on average, but that's probably because my ISP is geared towards business users with dedicated lines for their internet connections).

Buenchico - there are so many of those speed test sites, and there can be significant differences between the results that they give. Why do you reckon that site to which you have linked is any better than that given by the OP?

I am on an 8MB line with O2 and am approx 300m from exchange. Typical values are 7 down and 1 up.

On Be un limited ... cant complain, it works a treat ... and all for ... £4.16 pm

Hi folks, perhaps I shouldn't have asked my question because I am getting confused by the replies. What with Mbps and Kbps being involved and my having to do what to some might be simple mathematical calculations. Whereas really all I wanted to know was if the Broadband speeds which I am getting are fairly good.

Anyway I have done as suggested by Chris and report as follows:-

Line Quality B* MOS 431...( Reportedly....VG for Internet, although some on-line games may not perform optimally)

Ping 55ms...Jitter( whatever that means) 2ms......Unable to Test,Packet loss.

Speed Test...Download 6.33. Upload 0.22. Ping 82.
.............................................



The figures are not consistent with a Line test giving me a Ping of 55 and the Speed test listing a Ping of 82.

I am now thinking that my Broadband is performing reasonably well. Does anyone agree.?

It depends on what you want. Assuming you have signed up for an 8MB service your download speed is reasonable but I think your upload is slow. If you don't upload much (sending large emails with images attached etc) then that should not be a problem.
Speed depends on distance from exchange, quality of wiring plus other factors.

scotman...I understand what you have said and as I signed-up with BT on the basis that a minimum of 5mb was available in my area of the uk (Gower) I now feel that the service I am getting is fairly reasonable; especially as I don't play games on-line and very rarely send e/mails with photographs or large files., so upload speed is of little importance to me.

Incidentally, the speeds I quoted in my last posting were obtained from speedtest.net as originally suggested by Buenchico.

Did this link from Chris the other day and my download was o.1 something, upload 0.3 something. That's why iplayer and youtube are 'garbarge' for me.
