24d "Alabama is one" (6,5) H?T?O? S?A?E. Looks like Hotrod or Hotdog state, but i can find no reference to either of these. Any ideas please.

Thank you vegasmad:- The first letter, H, came from 23a "Goat's beard" = John-go-to-bed-at-noon; could it be Jock instead to create cotton
bulb is the name for the projection
Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon = goat's beard
yes to buttress - definition at dictionary.com no. 4 in the list of definitions
