It tells the story of a woman who, as a teen escaped from Warsaw - across mountains and also spent time in a prisoners of war camp.
When the books begins, the woman is middle-aged living in a luxury & high security appartment in America. She also had a grown-up daughter.
However the woman is plagued by someone or something from her past that is a threat to her.
The story also includes the lives of 2(?) other women (who escaped with her) all now living in different parts of the world. One of the women runs a finishing school/or private secretary service in Europe.
The women begin dying one by one. It transpires that someone is tracking them in an attempt to get the jewels that the women were given when they escaped from Warsaw (not realising that the jewels were lost in transit).
Towards the end of the book, the woman is called to the hospital to see an injured man; who she believes she does not know. She realises that the man's current name is the name of a man she knew back in Warsaw.

I should add that the book is a fictional story and I don't think it was based at all on real life, though it was written as such. Something else I remember about the book (I hope I don't ruin the story for anyone currently reading it) but at the end of the book the woman is confronted in her appartment by a man from her past - I think it was the one she'd visited in hospital. I'm not sure how but he was able to work or 'crack' the appartment's security features to torment the woman and trap the woman inside for a final show-down.
