a famous one is Duke Ellington ; then lose the weight (ton) ; but where the extra w comes from I know not

Well blow me down! I live 5 miles from Wellington. And the wretched monument is dedicated to The Duke of Wellington even though he never visited the town (Don't really blame him.) I knew I needed my head examining. Thank you ulysses100 and bibblebub. Stop fussing bibblebub. ulysses100 is right - the w doesn't quite work for me - it shouldn't be there.

Wellington is probably the most famous Duke ever so the D+WELLING(TON) is the one which smacks you in the face.

D is an abbreviation for duke, quite common in crosswords. Add this to Welling(ton) and you get dwelling.
