Is inteligence the be all and end all of a person?

It appears to me that if you get your punctuation wrong, make a spelling mistake etc you will get slated by the likes of markrae.

I know my punctuation is dreadful and my good lady Carakeel will often correct it for me, I can live with it without a problem. I don't think anybody is so perfect. It is a fault that can make a sentence or a paragraph difficult to read at times I'm sure.

Do people really judge a person by these qualities.

I work with a whole range of staff with varying degrees of education, some are very clearly educated to a very poor degree.

I find in my workplace that the staff with poorer education, far more caring, sincere, trustworthy, always on time and rarely off sick and less argumentative and surprisingly great organisers.

Why do some people find that putting other people down so satisfying, is it to cover up their own inadequacies maybe?

If people are going to put you down, correcting spelling is only one way of doing it; I'm not sure it's the worst way by any means. Some posts on here are so badly written it's hard to figure out what they mean. Others have spelt vital words wrongly so it's clear they won't find an answer if they try googling; that's the sort of case when I'll point out a spelling mistake.

But I've never found that poorer education = nicer people. I don't think it works that way at all.

Education is not the same as intelligence....so lack of it does not make you-or anyone else-any less intelligent. Nor does it mean that the guy with the degree-or the obsession with punctuation-is any more intelligent than you.

My English is rubbish (even worse if I hand write anything) so no, I don't think quality of written English means anything when it comes to ability to do other jobs.

I rarely correct anyone's spelling or grammar as long as they've made the effort, OK they may have got it wrong, but I'd rather see something spelt wrong over a question typed in txt speak anyday.

Hello RATTER, unfortunately there are some odd people who will correct you at every turn, that's life as we know it, not suggesting Mark does this deliberately, I like the guy a lot, I do agree with what you have said tho' I am a great organizer and had a run of the mill education, your last sentence is also a very accurate one too.:-0)

At least Mark does answer questions seriously on here, I get the feeling he points out peoples mistakes more through exasperation than trying to "get one up" on people.

So let me turn this back on you. Look at the original post. And look at it again. This person is part of the future generation of our nation. His peers are going to be running the country in twenty years or so. And he can hardly string two words of our national language together in any sort of cohesive sentence.

If that were your child, would you not wonder what (if anything) his school was doing about it?

spelling and grammar critisism is always a cheap shot for some members of answerbank, the worry I have is that the question or query is overlooked because of the need to dominate the replies with sarcastic/offensive remarks about spelling and grammar.

my spelling is quite shoddy so I can empathise with some users who have difficulties. as long as I understand the majority of what is being said I am happy enough.

one can be very well educated and intelligent, but at sometime in your life you may not be just as "on the ball" as you once were. and some smart a*** gleefully pointing out ones mistakes can be quite disheartening.

agree anne, however I will say I can understand where mark is coming from, if pointed out to me I often will remember the way something is spelled correctly for future reference. I am surprised to see at a few schools now that spelling errors are ignored when the teacher marks the work.
