As helen syas, only when they don't have passengers. Checked with with my dad who is a taxi driver, so hopefully it's correct!

your dad is not quite correct, chelle. point i of the exemption says

"(i) a licensed taxi while it is being used for seeking hire, or answering a call for hire"

so there doesn't need to be a passenger but he does have to be actually working so to speak.

Thank you everyone,can stop worrying now,hubby got fined £60 for not having seatbelt on, he was driving on motorway after dropping off passenger.

I'd say he does have to be wearing a seatbelt in that situation so the £60 fine is correct.

Unless he was seeking a fare on a motorway?

Regardless of the legal requirement to wear a seatbelt, hope, it would be interesting to know why your husband (presumably a professional driver) would not choose to wear one. I accept there may be circumstances when he is carrying passengers that he might not wear one for the reasons already outlined. However, that was not the case here.

Tests have overwhelmingly shown that wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of serious injury in all manner of collisions and that this advantage far outweighs the likelihood of a seatbelt causing injury because, for example, an occupant becomes trapped by wearing one. In particular, if a car is fitted with airbags, the protection they provide is not only reduced if a seatbelt is not worn, but the deployment of an airbag can itself cause additional injury if the occupant is unrestrained.

I’m sorry to open up your straightforward question to a wider debate and I’m not having a go (your hubby can do as he pleases as far as I’m concerned). I’m just genuinely intrigued as to why anybody would choose not to wear a seat belt.

I would most certainly not be alive today (x2) if it wasn't for seatbelts.

MY husband used to be a taxi driver and never wore a seatbelt when working. He used to work in a town and taking it off and putting it on all the time was a pain (lots of short trips) and yes, he was actually one of those drivers who would actually bother to get out of the car to knock on your door rather than just beep you!
