I don't have children so I guess I can't really have an opinion but I'm intruiged by something.

You are in a super market with your mum/nan and you have a toddler in the trolley. Your toddler is screaming blue murder the whole time you are in the supermarket. What do you do?

go shopping without the children

most toddlers hate shopping
run away
What do you do?....bu99er all.....let it annoy everybody.

What would I do?...give it a slap and something to cry about.
if mine do that i try to distract them. ignore the bad behaviour and do my best to get them chatting or playing instead

Mine were pretty good though.

My mother in law copied my nephew once (a bit like the advert) by screaming just as he was. he soon stopped.
but it will continue to cry sqad, would you continue to keep slapping it in the hope that it will shut up?

Distract toddler. Can be hard if the toddler wants something though. You don't want to give in so they think screaming gets them what they want. They can be embarrassing sometimes. My son used to shout "daddy!" to random men!
i agree dont take them shopping !
cazz.....no....if after the slap it continued, then what have you lost?

What have you gained?....you say do that again tomorrow and you will get another slap.
The choice is their´s.
I hate to say it but I travel a lot and you rarely see this kind of behaviour in other cultures. It`s definately a Britsh/US phenomenon. You could walk around an Oriental (for example) supermarket all day and not see the tantrums you see here. I was waiting to cross the road in Singapore a while ago and a kid in a pushchair started screaming and everybody turned around to look because it`s so unusual. I`ve probably opened a can of worms now but I stand by what I say.
Pop them in the freezer?
Sqad. Of all the people on AB you are the one I would like to meet most.
if you slap a child enough times, it becomes immune to the fear of being slapped.

The woman didn't seem to be making any effort to try and calm the child, it was as if she couldn't hear him. Although I assume she was trying the ignore tactic.

The sound was horrendous and I'm sure they were following just to annoy me. I was sooooo tempted to walk over and bluntly tell the little darling to pack it in.
When my son was little - when in a supermarket or any shops - I always took a bag of peeled and cut up apple quarters - he would happily sit and munch his way through it and keep quiet.

When I was little only the poshest of people used the word "Father", so one day when the Vicar came round I said, "Hello, Daddy!"
