Queen Christiana (the Cheerful One) suddenly changed her mood and became more secretive and cryptic as she chose the rather innocent looking theme: “The Secret Garden”. However, her selected link words were far from innocent, as she went for:

Peace OFFERING (Needed to subdue the revolting natives?)
Plant KINGDOM
PLAIN Song (Unaccompanied church singing)
Pots HERD (A fragment of pottery)

In truth, I thought that it would take an exceptional player to be able to predict some of these. But there again, we DO have some exceptional players taking part!

This week, the first eight entrants came and went without a single success. However, Player #9 was truly exceptional (ie Strix) who doubled up by claiming POTSHERD delivered in PLAIN SONG for an impressive score of FOUR POINTS. He was closely followed by Dinkypuzzled with his version of Plainsong (for Two Points). To finish off a splendid opening spell, wickedtongue found a new link with PEACE OFFERING which he supported with another (devious) Potsherd to match the earlier FOUR POINTS of Strix.

These two completed their Tweedledee~Tweedledum act to share the honours of this week’s round. In other words, they share the coveted title and become HOT SHOTS OF THE WEEK. It would take entrants of their calibre to untangle the intricate thought patterns of Queen Christiana ~ A task impossible for mere mortals!

With only three link words uncovered, the scorers of One Point were thin on the ground. Nevertheless, MM-link regulars jobjockey, tearinghair, Handbaglady and miss meg each rose to the challenge before the mighty ladyalex pulled off her usual trick by identifying the very last link with PLANT KINGDOM and so claiming the last TWO POINTS of the game. Among the remaining 15 players, only LaneyB and mirandasmum were able to trouble the scorer in what proved to be a difficult game.

The League Table after this third week is:

SIX POINTS: ladyalex, lysander & Strix
FIVE POINTS: wickedtongue
THREE POINTS: Mrs Ont-ice & tearinghair
TWO POINTS: centrino, gen2, grannydi, Handbaglady, jan1956, Jools, patchett, rockfordill, slaney, twix123 & ulysses100
ONE POINT: beejay1124, BigMac, ChrisHewat, SHAZZA, cliffyg, Eiggam, Elspeth, jobjockey, kawakiri, kettledrum, LaneyB, mirandasmum, missmeg & teacher1

With three weeks over, the top of the League Table reads like a “Who’s Who” in MM Linkland! Of the 17 entrants on Two Points or more, I reckon at least 13 are MM Links ex-champions. Where is the new talent?

Next week will be decision time, when the January “Chosen One” will need to step up to the mark and become the Setter of the February MM Links. For the present, this is crofter signing off.

Until we meet up again: HAPPY LINKING!

:o)
