Why Do Iphone Selfies Make You Look So Weird?

So I have an old iPhone 7, and whenever I take a selfie on it, I usually look at the pic and my face looks all distorted, such as having a nose that looks wonky, eyes look wieird, chin looks massive, hair looks messed up, but in the mirror my face is perfectly symmetrical and occasionally I manage to capture that type of image on my camera, albeit rare. I also remember 6 years ago when I graduated uni, I got my photo professionally taken by the uni in my cap and gown and I looked very handsome, but on the photos taken on my dads phone I looked horrendous. Why do phone cameras make you look so hideous?

Sandy roe- but it literally looks completely different, such as a wonky face, but if my face was really like that, it wouldn't look symmetrical in the mirror

People's faces are NEVER symmetrical. You are seeing what you want to see.

Bednobs- why was it that when I had my photo professional taken on a proper camera I looked great, but on the same day when I had it taken on the camera phone I looked totally different?

If that's true, bednobs, then why don't I see George Clooney?

Show the professional photo and the camera photo to a friend and ask if they can see a difference and which looks most like you

Photos are a  'snapshot' in time (no pun intended). You looked like that for the micro second the pic was taken.

Bednobs- I understand what you're saying but my point is that on the selfie pic, it kind of makes my face look very unnatural looking, like exaggerated features such as a longer face etc

Selfies are usually taken from close up, and this results in distortion. e.g. big head and small body,

It's the focal length of the lens that's the problem. Portraits should be taken with a fairly long focal length lens; aiming to flatten the face and blur the background; selfies are designed to get as much as possible in focus (background and foreground) so use a short focal-length lens. With a short lens objects close to the lens (eg, the nose) look disportionately bigger than those further away.

Selfie photos are usually reversed which makes us appear different. Try using the flip <> button in editing to see it reversed and might look better.

If you look at ANY police mugshot you would almost always think the person is guilty.
