Hi,

My ex-of 3 years moved out before Christmas highlighting one of the reasons as my lack of friends, social activities etc Which I fully aceept ... I've always been like "I'm going to do this .../become this ..." but I never do anything about them. So now shes gone I have finally realised there is a big nothingness of both activities and friends in my life so I'm looking at local evening classes at college. I was thinking about doing 3 ... is this too many?

From this week it will be (for 12 weeks):

Mon Evening - Intro to Counselling
Tue Evening - Intro to Java and VB (IT course)
Wed Evening - Basic Spanish

Are evening classes a great place to meet people and is doing 3 evening classes too much to take on?

Thanks for any advice/experiences shared.

hello!

whilst i`ve not been in your situation, i have a feeling that 3 evening classes for three consecutive days is a little too much too soon. as for meeting people- you do tend to meet all types of people, however this shouldn`t be your main reason for joining an evening class. good luck!
What's your job like? A friend on mine has a few one and finds it quite draining a while in cos so much of her time is taken up.

Is it a whole evening taken up for each one? Make sure you take time for yourself though and to be happy in your own company :)

Great you're getting yourself out and about though :)
If you have the time to do them all then go for it :-) theres nothing like learning something new to make you feel better about yourself :-)

But dont be forced into doing something just coz of something someone else has told you!!

I'm stunned that someone you spent 3 years of YOUR life with could be so harsh to be honest :-(

Thanks for your kind responses.

The classes are 2-3 hours each night and with the travelling time (as I don't drive) it will be all evening.

I was just looking down some other colleges that might turn out easier and quicker to get to have similar courses.

I think 3 might be a bit tough so I'm thinking of not doing the Spanish as I do actually have a Learn Spanish kit at home so I could try that out first!

I'm a trainee accountant (but it's being reviewed by both my employer and me as I'm not 100% enjoying it and I've failed 2 exams and expecting 2 fails later this month) so I was also using evening classes as a potential career change taster (interested in careers advisor and IT careers if I decide to change).
Hey, don't give up on the accountancy...ask zorro about that!!!

Or start a plumbing course....loads of money in it and you meet new people everyday.
Hey, it really is great you're taking these positive steps.

If you're a trainee accountant and you like numbers and such and I note you're looking at a counselling course above.

How about considering something like debt counselling or providing financial advice? I'm sure there are some volunteer opportunites around that you could use for experience and to try it out and see if you like it.

There's some general info on this here...

You might find that even though you start off with three classes this may whittle down to one or maybe two as you narrow down where your main interests lie. Well done you for not wallowing and being willing to try something new.
