you have the misfortune to own an unreliable clock. this one gains exactly 18 mins every hour. it is now showing 1pm, and you know that it was correct at midnight when you set it. The clock stopped 12 hours ago, what time is it now?

Time to get a new clock!!

Sorry, I've been coming back to this all night, think I've worked it out, and then realise I haven't - it's been driving me nuts.
Ah - but correct at midnight - when?
It is 10 pm

The clock shows 78 minutes have passed for every 60 minutes or 1.3 hours for every hour.

The clock indicates thirteen hours have passed so that means ten hours in reality (10 x 1.3 = 13.)

The clock stopped twelve hours ago, ten plus twelve equals twenty-two so the time now must be ten pm.
agreed
Sorry I disagree.

Yes it gains 18 mins per hour, which is 18 X 13 hours up to when the clock stopped. That's 234 Mins = 3 hours 9 mins. Take that away from 1 pm when the clock stopped and the real time was 9 .51 am when the clock stopped. But that was 12 hours ago so the time is now plus 12 hours. That's 9.51 pm.
I think the mistake you're making YP - is that it gains 18 mins for every "real" hour - not the "false hours" it shows..........
Guess what Builder ? - I'll take your word for it, I'm not even trying to fathom that out!!
