The manager realises he has made a mistake and the room should only be £25 so he gives the bellboy 5 x £1 coins to give to the men, the bellboy realises he cannot split the £5 between the three men so he gives them each £1 and keeps the remaining £2 so the men have paid £9 each for the room = £27 plus the £2 the bellboy kept makes a total of £29 where is the other £1?

You don\'t take 27+2 = 29 you look at 27-2 = 25.
The men paid a total £27, of which £25 goes for the room and £2 to the bellboy.
