I know the obvious answer is 5 West Highland White Terriers, but can anyone else come up with an alternative answer, please.

In case you disagree, if you take 7 then that's how many you have. The question doesn't say if you take seven away how many would you have left.

Unless of course, you took 7 puppies which had just been born to 1 or more of the group of 12 , in which case you'd have 19!
