Why do we hear a lot of negative news repeatedly in recent times? War, Earth Quakes, Flooding, Tsunamis, Economy crashes, Global Warming, etc?

Because the world is more inter-connected news-reporting-wise.
We hear of things that in the past would have gone unremarked.

Because the media believe that the drama of shock horror news is more likely to capture the public's interest than happy stories about garden fetes, or how successful David Cameron's daffodils have been this year, (for example).

Because a lot of disastrous things have happened in a short space of time. That's one of the drawbacks of having world news streamed into your living room.

As has been said above.

If a highly respected celeb enjoyed a lovely dinner to raise funds for a charity it would hardly get a mention. But if that person accidentally made a loud bodily noise, it would make headline news.

Indeed. No-one who has ever worked in technical support has ever received a call saying "I'd just like to say how fast the network is running today". Bad news is profitable news.
