ANYBODY AN EXPERT ON SILVER HALLMARKS??

Does anyone know about hallmarks? I have a silver fruit knife with a good set of hallmarks. I have tried to figure them out but im just not sure about them. i know it is british but don't know what year. It could possibly be from the reign of George II. If you know anything about hallmarks, could i send a picture to your email address? Thanks

You could send it to me with pleasure but if I post my email on here someone will lhave a fit and i'll likely get suspended, but I can ID it for you if you describe it IN ORDER that you see the marks.
So it will run something like:- CROWN E LION
There can be up to 5 and there will likely also be a makers mark something like WJ or some other meaningless letters.
the date year letter is the only one likely to cause any trouble as they repeat with small differences, but I'll do my best:)

ok nox i will try. The 1st symbol, set in an oval, seems to be a set of scales with a 'V' under them, the next symbol is the head of what looks like George III set in an oval and the last is a lion with quite a bushy mane.

no, they definately look like scales

ok scale equals imported, lion = standard sterling silver london and v depends on what the shield and the letter actually look like.

well it looks like imported, hallmarked for 1735 and then sovereign duty paid in George III time - the incosnistency being the V and the duty hallmarks, though possible the duty was paid later - if it had been outside the UK......

needs a specialist eye..

I think that maybe the symbol that i said was a pair of scales is actually a crown. When i look at the symbol upside down, it is clearly a crown?!?

That makes sense - 1798, Sheffield, Sterling Silver..............so George III
