many years ago my brother owned a small sealed glass vessel that had a coloured liquid inside and when you held it in the palms of your hands the liquid 'boiled'

it was fascinating and i want to buy one

any ideas what it was called and how it worked?

i know exactly what you mean - i used to have a pen with a glass bulb on the end that did thst. No idea what it's called tho, sorry!
It sounds a bit like the blood of San Gennaro. A true miracle......
Does St Gennaro's blood boil when people mock the true faith?
No sandy - only when the archbishop holds it aloft before the congregation. You can see it on youtube so it must be true.....
