I believe Jennifer Worth (the author) actually picked her for the role of Chummy.

no, jennifer worth kept her own memoirs and published a trilogy...Call the Midwife (2002), Shadows of the Workhouse (2005) and Farewell to the East End (2009).

i believe a scriptwriter took the books and turned them into a script (at request) with jennifer worth guiding - assuming thats what you mean?

apparently, according to a radio show, they were looking to make a show and asked for memoirs to be submitted, and were then given hers to read!

i think that it's nicer that they are real and that she knew they would be made into a prog before she died! x
