Adult Education - basic literacy
9 Answers
HELLO! Now then you fine people, do you remember the part in The Shawshank Redemption, where the led character teaches the young lad basic literacy? I'm in the happy position of being called to do the same for some young men in rehab, and was wondering if any of you could direct me to free online resources to print out and use? I'm a mental health nurse by profession, but have been offered this honourable add-on role, and want to do my very best for the young (and not-so-young) men in my care.

How lovely that you want to help these youngsters. It is heartbreaking how many opportunities are missed out on if you can't read. I would go for magazines aimed at young men, although these are not free you may find someone who will pass them on. Maybe the cinema mags. Also it may be worth visiting some of the news sites and printing out articles from there. You don't say what part of the country you are from. If you are on a mainline station route there is a free morning paper called Metro. It has some interesting articles. and the Evening Standard as well. Good luck
