I suppose there's no reason why UK can't be their <closest> and <deepest>

and still be just as <strong> as France

the terms are not contradictory.

The USA has 'alliances' and 'understandings' with lots of countries.

I expect someone in the WH keeps a list of terms to make sure expressions applied to different countries don't conflict.

The US ordered the UK out of Suez in the 50s

The US didn't bother telling the UK when it invaded a British territory (Grenada) in the 80s.

The US did everything to avoid supporting the UK during the Falklands.

Maybe the US have designs of tackling Iran after all and they want a junior partner (or lackey)to hold their hand. We always fall for their flattery!

The Queen sold Obambam the concept of the Special Relationship and they fell for it hook, line and sinker. And probably Cameron and Sam have a lot in common with them and do get on well. Obambam is wanting to line up a 2nd State visit come 18 - 24 months time.

On top of that Pres Sarcastic has been typically French.....

And Obambam did not like or trust that wonderful and inspirational PM of ours, Gordon Brown. Look at that embarrassing incident in the kitchens of the UN when the puppy ran after his Master - and remember both were representing the left wing of their respective politics...

sp1814, the US did exactly the right thing over Suez: Britain's behaviour was shameful, and the US said so. A pity we didn't return the favour during the Iraq invasion.

Grenada ceased to be a British colony after WW2. The Yanks should have mentioned their invasion plans to us, but it wasn't mandatory.

They should have been more supportive over the Falklands, though.

As for Obama's speeches, I believe this is called diplomacy. (Perhaps not the OP's strongest point?)
