Silver y irredescent t insect trail

I appear to have some kind  of creature/slug which comes out at night. It leaves a very random trail along my carpet, which looks like a silvery dust. It disappears as soon as you touch it. Does anybody know what it might be??!

I had this a few years back and eventually traced it back to a slug that had taken up residence in a pot plant which had been outside over the summer.

I know that silverfish come out at night but whether they leave a trail or not I've never noticed.
