I have always had medium length nails and have looked after them carefully over the years. However recently they have all started to peel in layers from the top edge which is really annoying as they "catch" in everything and I have to cut them down quite short, and even when they are so short that they are level with my finger, they still peel. Am I deficient in some Vitamin or nutrient do you think? and can anyone recommend some product to use to help this please.... Thanks.
I have exactly the same problem Ann. I have never had good nails, but during last year this peeling was really getting me down. My nails were getting paper thin. What has worked best is making sure my nails get plenty of moisture and Nu Nale which has been around for years and years seems to have worked. I religiously used it after getting my hands wet and last thing at night. My nails have improved. They still peel a bit, but at long last I have white bits at the tops of them.
So slap on loads of hand cream and get some Nu Nail. Avoid the paint on nail hardeners. All they do is try out your nails more than ever and ultimately make things worse.
Many thanks lottie, I will try that :) I think the problem may be using nail varnish all the time - 50 years of wearing it have finally caught up with me, but I can't bear to see my nails bare!
I have this problem too..nails now down level to top of finger...did try
a sally hansen product, did'nt do a lot. I have lines running vertically,
sometimes at the top of nail, it splits, and seems to carry on as the nail
grows.
Lotty, who makes Nu Nails..might give that a try, nothing lost!
I have the same problem-and working in a kitchen means nothing helps.
I do wear nail polish-as it protects a bit. Wearing gloves doesn't help all that much. ;-( ..and I get fed up with pulling them on and off all day.
I recently tried NuNail cream...made no difference.
Apparently it's an age related problem, and some nutrients help-so I am ordering Biotin. It's known to help hair, skin and nails.
I have recently bought some rose hip oil after reading an article on it heaping praise on all its qualities ............. good for rubbing on wrinkles, scars, hair, dry skin on feet and elbows etc etc so I am going to dry rubbing it on my nails every night - watch this space!

I can get screws out with my fingernails :)
Get a four way buffer and file and buff them regularly .
Baby oil rubbed in is just as good as anything .In fact believe it or not hair serum is brilliant to rub into nails .
My nails were a mess after having gel nails done for a special occasion - six months ago.
It has taken this long for them to grow out and I have been using Sally Hansen maximum growth cuticle and nail treatment and I must say there is a real improvement.
Kanewood, I have tried the Sally Hansen stuff and it is probably very good, but it is not good for peeling nails with vertical splits. I think it's a 'getting older thing' and is caused by lack of moisture from what I have read. That Sally Hanson stuff made the peeling worse if I am honest. It does make them feel harder and stronger I agree, but all it meant was that when the layers peeled off they were thicker layers and they tore off more easily.
Unfortunately Shaney a four way buffer thingy did nothing for my peeling nails at all. They just got thinner and thinner - they were really like paper they were so thin. I agree about the oil thing though. I often rub Teatree oil into them.
I have always had weak nails. What really annoys me is that Mr LL and son both have those nice shaped strong Filbert nails grrrrrr
The Sally Hansen one is good actually .It's a pen which contains an oily stuff which you paint on .It's not like a varnish .I've got one ..it's very good .

You just paint it over the whole nail anyway and it'll soak in .
But ..I still say that hair serum
( cheap and cheerful little bottle from Wilkinsons ) rubbed in daily will cure your peeling nails :)
Probably would Shaney. I have found NuNale very good though and it was only a couple of squid. I am not very careful with my nails when I get outside in the garden or IF AND WHEN I do housework! I envy you!!
And as for Wilkinson's our local town doesn't have such a thing - it doesn't have anything!!!!
I agree with Lottie...it's an age thing. Our nails-and hair-lose moisture as we get older. I've got vertical splits also that just seem to get worse and worse. I've one on my right thumb-and I find filing makes it worse, and I can't clip it properly with my left hand,...grrrr. I was told by someone who does manicures that buffing too often can also make it worse,as it thins the nail.
The only product that has ever really worked for me is this -
