it's not that hard to type "speed of sound" in google ...
It replies "speed of sound at sea level = 340.29 m / s"
They mean "speed of sound in air at sea level" .

Yes, first place I tried was google, but I needed it in mph........and there is not a definitive answer. thanks anyway
It's not definitve because it depends on the density of the medium the sound wave is travelling in. At sea level, in air, its about 760 mph.
In water it more like 1.5km per sec (4-5 times faster).
Question Author
yes, I've found its dependent on air temperature, etc. Its an answer to a competition, so they are looking for a specific figure.

If you can't convert m/s into mph,
here is a website that can do it for you:

http://www.digitaldutch.com/unitconverter/

it tells me 761.207051 mph

To give a specific answer they need to ask a specific question. The question as phrased is so general it could be deemed nonsensical.
700mph
i always thought it was 300 m/s or perhaps no it can't be in a vacum cause then it would not travel as there r no molecules in the air to transmit vibration so when is it 300 m/s ? or am i very mistaken oooops !
Someone previously posted that the speed of light was faster than the speed of sound in order that you could see who was making the bloody racket.
ask coldplay.. i believe it's either X or Y..

I did ask Chris, I was that desperate

Your all wrong its relative to the speed of your hearing, if you are faster at hearing than the guy next to you then, Then sound sis faster therefore the euation

lug hole + vibration + distance  = speed of sound.

Which is multiplied if you have 2 lug holes so it twice as fast if you have 2 ears. Know if your deaf or no lug holes the speed of sound is differnt.

The equation for this is

noise + distance + vibration = speed of sound

so just miss out the lug holes
