Old Pub Trick

Some years ago I remember a bloke walking into our local with a glass bottle, an empty whisky bottle I think it was, inside the bottle was a piece of wood that was too big to fit through the neck of the bottle but though the wood at right angles was a 2inch nail, on examination the bottle had not been broken and glued back together, It's a bit like a ship in a bottle but know how that is done but the nail through the wood has baffled me for around 20 years now, does anybody know how it was done?
