How Exactly Does Excessive Alcohol Consumption Weaken Your Heart?

I'm a bit worried about my alcohol intake as yesterday i i downed a whole litre of bacardi and was told that constant drinking like that weakens your heart? How?

It works like this, first your liver fails, resulting in too many toxins and metabolic breakdown products in your blood. You turn yellow. Your now overloaded kidneys begin to fail resulting in even higher levels of nasty stuff in your blood. All this nasty stuff is poisoning you, you feel awful and then worse when nobody will give you a new liver. Your heart stops and you die.

I don't know about specific effects on the heart, but a policeman friend learnt from a drink awareness course that the body converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, which is a highly toxic substance. I googled it and now I drink significantly less!
