A catalyst speeds up a reaction but does not take part in it. It has on effect on the energy of molecules.

No. They reduce the activation energy required for the reaction to take place.

not a bad q., as the question involves the first law of thermodynamics ( energy cannot be created or destroyed i e is conserved)

enzymes work as catalysts in that they hold the molecule in an activated state for longer so there is a greater chance of the reaction occurring. see the two answers above
