soya lecithin

Hi, can anyone tell me exactly what lecithin is? my son has an allergy to soya but foods containing soya lecithin dont affect him. It worries me every time I check the ingredients and see this because I have no idea what it is. I would never attempt to give my son a soya bean so am i putting him at risk letting him eat cakes and biscuits etc?
