Totally hypothetically of course. In all Sci Fi films when artificial gravity is switched off everything begins to 'float'. Why would this happen because surely there was s no force to cause the momentum?

If you were walking at the moment of switch-off, the thrust of your last footstep would send you in the direction of the ceiling (although the concept of 'ceiling' is somewhat academic, under the circumstances'.

My preference for artificial gravity would involve the spaceship spinning about an axis although I calculated a 100m ring-shape would have to spin at about 10rpm to generate 1g… which would make for gut-churning views out of the window. :-/ …and you can't switch it off instantly.

You are correct. Things would remain in their state of rest until acted upon by some external force.
If gravity were switched off instantaneously I would expect to observe a rebound effect equal to roughly half of the acceleration of gravity prior to the switch off as a consequence of the tension stored up within the respective liberated bodies.
How would the film makers indicate the gravity switch had been flicked off otherwise ?
