Red Wine – Black Tongue

After drinking red wine, I have long noticed that my tongue turns black – mostly over the central area, towards the rear.

The discolouration does not occur immediately on contact with red wine, but sufficiently rapidly to believe that it is not due to bacterial growth, which can cause tongue discolouration under certain conditions.
The discolouration can be removed (to some extent) with brushing,

I have searched on line for an explanation without success.

Can anyone answer the question as to why my tongue turns black after drinking red wine?

At one time I went to see the doctor as I was seriously concerned about what I thought was rectal bleeding. Turns out it was the result of my fondness for pickled beetroot.
You were putting them in the wrong end !
I have just been drinking red wine and my tongue is black....but it's not hairy...that would be a problem...hairy tongue?
Aww, blackadder's blushing. Or at least his cheeks have turned red.
Not if you have a brush Tilly.

Well it looks like only Tilly & me suffer from black tongue through drinking red wine – but I bet most red wine drinkers experience this; just stick your tongue out in front of a mirror, half an hour after drinking red wine and see.
It's happens to me on the rare occasions I drink red wine.
Just to confirm, Hymie. I get the black tongue but not the hairs.
Hymie.......some time ago...and for no reason we could fathom....whenever I drank red wine everywhere on my body that was touching gold or silver would turn black.
My ears lobes, neck and wrists but my hands where rings were touching were the worst....the black would spread all over my hands.....

A night out and I came home looking as if I'd been in a fight......☻
Yes, Blackadder, we grow beetroot and when it is in season ----- it looks scary!
Oh and yes......now always a black tongue....always have to drink white before going to the dentist......☺
Hairy tongue is a separate medical condition and has nothing to do with wine.

It is because of the tannins (they react with your saliva) and the antocian (the red color in wine). An easy way to rinse your mouth after drinking red is actually to drink a bit of white vino(work on stains as well).
Gness, are you sure you weren't confusing the red wine with Holy water. Dip...sprinkle, sprinkle?
Thanks, Sqad. Another glass of wine then by order of the physician. That's good.
Tilly.....the last time I had anything to do with Holy Water....it was Poteen...♣
I knew I was clutching at straws!
