Life On Earth, Science Vs Religion
I don't wish to denigrate any individuals beliefs, but I am curious how this story is received by those who follow religion and the origins of the earth taught through religion.
Do some Christians take the biblical accounts of creation literally, believing that they describe exactly how the universe and human beings were created.

I am just curious whether it tests their faith is all?
I wasn't aware that Scientology and "science" are similar. Science is the study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment, Scientology is more of a philosophy isn't it (I don't know a great deal about it)
If we are presented with undeniable proof (not that the attached article is anywhere near proof). How do those who follow religion keep undeniable faith?

To answer your question directly, how can it not test their faith ?
Science will always win hands down, when it comes to a battle between the logical and rational, and fairy stories and superstition. I always use the Grand Canyon question, when dealing with "born-again" Christians. They believe it is about 6000 years old !

If someone believes in religious mumbo jumbo and takes an old book as evidence, they have probably given up (or never started) to accept science as explainer of our world. They see science as either confirming how utterly brilliant the creator was by magicing all the wonderous stuff on our planet, or thw work of the devil by undermining faith.
So in short, they have already made up their minds, and any scoentific discovery, if they accept it at all, will just be used to confirm their beluefs rather than undermine it.

that would represent something of a paradox. those that promote the concept of intelligent design recognise a timeline for the earth dating back aroud 6000 years. so how could religion have existed earlier than that?

Creationists don’t necessarily believe in the ‘Young Earth’ theory (calculated by James Ussher in the 17th century). Many creationists think the earth is far older, and I imagine some of those may be jumping for joy at this news because it means that life arose on earth at approximately the same time as the earth itself came into existence, which would align with the biblical account of the creation. That said, unless God physically resembles something akin to an amoeba and allowed evolution to do its stuff over the years, the claim that he made man in his image can’t be right.
