Diesel/petrol Mixed

I was in a petrol station today filling up with petrol this guy on the next pump said he puts in half a tank of petrol and half of diesel, he then said he gets more to the gallon is he nuts or is he right? I did not notice if his car was diesel or petrol, it was a big Citreon.

I think he was having you on! Car would quickly grind to a halt, whether it's diesel or petrol.

What causes less damage - petrol in a diesel or diesel in a petrol engine?

Diesel contains more energy per unit volume than petrol but probably not enough to make it worthwhile at current prices and that assumes complete combustion. I once ran an outboard motor on paint thinners for an hour os so but that was out of desperation rather than economy.

Zacs, my big Citroen gives 50mpg at 70 mph and has run faultlessly for the last 6 years., It was 6 years old when I bought it.

It goes without saying I did not take him up on it, on my rounds as a postman one day I came across this chap filling up with bottles of cooking oil, he said it ran great but had a funny smell.

Years ago when diesel was much more crude than it is now a trick the wagon drivers used to stop their diesel going really gloopy in cold weather was to put a drop of petrol in it. Only a drop though, not half and half.

With diesel down to 98p a litre it is cheaper than cooking oil,but don't be tempted to fry your chips in diesel.
The guy was having a laugh, a petrol car will not run on a mixture nor will a diesel.

I do not wish to appear disrespectful to the man and I know you can't really tell but he did not look as they say a full shilling, but he did seem to use two different pumps.

A petrol car would stop immediately the desiel hit the engine. A diesel would most likely run fine but would damage the engine on s very short time, I have done it, accidentally and burned out the injectors and valves within a week.

I Aldo ran my VW camper on used chip oil for about 12 months, that ran perfectly, but always smelled like a mobile chip van from outside.

Spikey, we used Paraffin / Petrol, the derv never froze, if you do not put additives within the tank, the derv goes like Jelly.

Magic, the camper was diesel, you cannot put anything but petrol in a petrol engine and expect it to run, maybe alcohol, but why would you?

I have no intention of doing so RATTER15 it's just that he looked so genuine, I will stick to petrol as there is only one place alcohol is going in our house ;)
