Grommet Query
7 Answers
Hi, I have a grommet in one of my ears.
The first one fell out relatively quickly and I had another larger one put in which now seems to have come out as well, it doesn't seem to be working anyhow. Had much longer with this one though, since October.
I wondered if anyone knew, I imagine Sqad with his expertise, why they don't tend to stay in longer term. More curiosity really.
Thanks for any help.

Grommets are a foreign body to the eardrum and it's naturally tendency is to get rid of the tube as soon as possible. Another factor is as the eardrum heals around the tube, the natural tendency of healing is to extrude the tube. There are many types of "long stay" tubes, almost all with flanges to hold them in, but even so, eventually they also are extruded.

Hi Sqad, thanks for explaining, it is appreciated.
They put a bigger one in this time and it has stayed in for far longer so that's been good.
Hoping for a less painful insertion this time, the first few tries they did for the last one were without sufficient local anaesthetic, deeply unpleasant and took me some courage to let them have another go with more anaesthetic in!
Will definitely be getting them to check I'm properly numbed next time.
The grommet does help though, glad I had them put in.

It's definitely a strange thing to have done while awake, someone fiddling (in a very technical way of course) inside your ear.
I admit, there were a few tears on the one without enough anaesthetic although it really was horribly painful and not much other option while someone has instruments in your ear as flinching and such isn't really a goer.
Might be an idea OG :)
That's a shame Pied Piper. They took mine out under the local before putting another in, it had fallen out in to the ear canal. At least I was anaesthetised...eventually!
