inconsistency of QED. Now, it's possible, I suppose, that there is
actually some nonperturbative UV fixed point for QED that we can't see
right now, but I don't think it's likely.
Nonetheless, the infinities that show up in individual diagrams aren't a
big deal. The infinities that show up in RG flows indicate that the
theory is effective. None of this is a mystery and hasn't been for years.
